Since
starting weight training at 17, Darryn has competed through the
ranks until he ultimately won the Overall Men's Title at the
Nationals in 2009. But Darryn said it wasn't
until he placed 5th at the 2008 Elite show that he invested real
thought into becoming a professional bodybuilder.
"Something just clicked in my head and
I thought to myself, I think I could get up there one day.
Any thoughts past that in terms of how would it feel to line up on
a pro stage would be best describes as 98% pure excitement, 2%
terrified or maybe it's more like 98% terrified and 2% excitement.
Either way it will be a dream come true."

Darryn finally
received his dream card when Moe Moussawi awarded Darryn his pro
card at the NZIFBB Nationals in 2010. "It was a feeling of
absolute joy. I was over the moon. Receiving my IFBB pro card is
for me the same as say for someone else that has always wanted to
be an All Black being selected to be
an All Black." he said.
Helping him on his journey to Melbourne is one of NZ's top
trainers, Wellingtonian Phily Nuku. Showing his commitment to
making the step up to the Pro league, Darryn and his wife Jamie
moved to Wellington so that he could work more closely with
Phily. "I had the opportunity to work with Phily in 2010 and
we just hit it off. I think he saw my potential and the passion I
have for the sport and my willingness to improve but more
importantly he knew I was prepared to listen and learn. I am
looking forward to progressing under his guidance.
How will it help with my competition goals? It will help me in many
ways, not only physically but in the mind. Remembering the
importance of a trainer is multi facetted. They are there to help
you, critique you, keep you moving forward and to keep you positive
but to name a few. Even the best have a trainer, for instance Tiger
Woods would have a trainer. Now that trainer may not hit the golf
ball as well as Tiger but that trainer through time and expertise
has acquired the skills to work on perfecting Tigers' golf
game."

Darryn's
approach to contest dieting is simple and always been the
same. He
says "I've never had any help with formulating an eating plan for
pre contest purposes, I just keep it
simple."
My breakfast @ 8.30 would consist of ten egg whites with porridge
and a Myofusion protein shake (all shakes are Myofusion)
Morning tea @ 10.30, five egg whites, tuna and kumara.
Lunch @ 12.30, chicken breast, kumara and a shake.
First afternoon tea @ 2.30, same as morning tea.
Second afternoon @ 4.30 Chic, kumara and a shake.
Pre workout @ 5.30 Gaspari SuperPump Intra Train (during training)
SizeOn Max.
Post Train Gaspari Myofusion.
Tea @ 8.30 Chic, shake, green beans.
Bed time @ 10.30 Shake.
"I have
the privilege of being sponsored by Gaspari Nutrition and have been
using Gaspari exclusively since April 2010. I absolutely love
Gaspari and with every fiber of my being plan to do the brand
proud. As far as what products I use from the range, although I am
able to use products from across the entire range, I use the
Myofusion protein powder, the best tasting powder on the market end
of story (strawberry is my fav) I use SuperPump, the greatest pre
workout product on the market and a product I would never not use
before training...ever.
I also use SizeOn Max as my intra train product. This product gives
me the piece of mind that my body is getting what it needs when it
needs it. Gaspari have the best products on the market and I know I
will continue to improve as an athlete with the use of these
products."

With the support
of Phily, Gaspari and ofcourse the love of a good woman behind him,
Darryn has got the right support system in place to come in
his best shape at his pro debut. However, he'll
still have nerves when the day finally comes to walk on with the
Pros.
"In truth, I think it will be very scary but at the
same time extremely exciting. To say it will be a dream come
true may sound like a cliché but that truly is what it will be for
me. My approach will be to do my best each and every time I
compete, to improve as an athlete but to always be learning from
those around me that have been there and done that. I don't
necessarily have to win but I have to fight like a warrior each
time I'm out there and fight I will."
Darryn said
his ultimate goal is to stand on the Mr Olympia Stage and to
be known as the best bodybuilder born
and bred from New Zealand. "I would also like to be recognised
as an athlete that represents the sport with dignity and humility."
Darryn added.

Finally Darryn’s advice for those who also dream of making
it as a Pro is simple “Never ever give
up. Believe in yourself. Don’t listen to those people that say
you’ll never make it. I call those people dream killers, I’ve
encountered more of these types of people than I can recollect over
the years.

| "Be prepared to
have to make many sacrifices but understand that to be good or the
best at something you have to be prepared work the hardest.
Remember it takes many years to build a physique so set your goals
and don’t give up until you achieve them!!”
All of NZ bodybuilding will be behind you Darryn as we watch
your dream come to fruition and your hardwork displayed on stage.
Go get 'em Mr O!
Good luck!!!!!
