Currently we are spoilt with amazing talent in the competitive Open Men's Athletic class with the likes of Rick Ujfallusy, Greg Mawson, Jason Bartley, Andrew Murray, Craig Smith, Aron Enoka and ofcourse our current hunk Paul Mountfort competing this year.  The Nationals are going to be a great spectacle if/and when we see all these conditioned guys lining up again.

The Athletic class is all about athletes coming in at their most muscular and leanest condition and you can always rely on Paul Mountfort to fit the criteria every time.  His commiment to a clean diet and consistant training sees him come in sharp everytime but he'll be the first to admit he can always do better.

In this update we find out more about Paul's strategy and the secret to his condition as he prepares for the NABBA BOP on 20 August.

Paul Mountfort has been competing in the body building field since 2004 achieving the following results:

First competition:- 3rd at Bays 2004, 6th at NZ Champs in Auckland and learnt a lot this first year having decided that he thought he knew a lot and in reality knew nothing.  One tip:- when you think you know it all, you know nothing, we learn something new every day from experience and those around us, be willing to listen.

2005:- Novice Athletic 2nd at NZ Champs.

2006:- 1st Tall Open Class and overall champ open; South Pacific Tall Novice 1st

2007:- Year off from competition

2008:- Came back to win the National Open Tall class

2009:- Year off from competition

2010:- BOP Champ and 3rd  at Asia Pacific pairs with Helen, 2nd in International Champs.

NABBA Waikato '11

Paul competes at a contest weight of between 83-85kg on stage but in his first competition weighed in at 78kgs and has managed to put on a kilo per year of lean mass.  Paul is a clean athlete and believes that steroid use is cheating and instills the 'clean' philosophy to his clients.  Off season his weight is between 90-95kgs by keeping his body fat at between 12-18%, maintaining his cardio levels once or twice a week with walking or light running.  Paul is lucky to be naturally lean and is able to partake in treats like his mum's banana cake and roast dinners.  Paul does not use fat burners due his concerns that it may take some of his muscle mass away, he leans up with increased cardio and naturally through nutrition.  Paul maintains that nutrition is 80% of the process.

Paul's typical nutrition diet pre contest is primarily: chicken, tuna, steak and venison and carbs are at breakfast (one cup rolled oats) and four protein shakes per day.  Due to the lack in getting the right nutrition through diet, Paul also takes a vast variety of vitamins & minerals as part of preparation and the build up to a show.

Paul's training regime is a four day split:
Monday - Biceps and Triceps;
Tuesday - shoulders and abs;
Wednesday is legs day
Thursday: chest and back

Close to competition posing comes into play during the week while doing weights plus Saturday (which is also the main cardio day with the team).    Most days there is cardio ensuring that his heart rate stays in the fat burning range for his age.  Sunday is rest and recovery day although Paul still does a light cardio - rest is important as part of the bodies build-up to contest.

Pauls advice is that nutrition is the key and the training is important.  Do not overtrain, much sure you get enough rest and sleep which is important especially for young people, make sure that your technique is correct, because of injury and imbalances that can occur in your body.  Make sure to learn what each body part and muscle does and having a personal trainer to correct you and steer you in the right direction and keep you motivated when those plateaus happen.  Be consistent and results do come and beware of some of whats on the internet as it can steer you wrong.
NABBA BOP '10

Paul is currently training some young motorcross riders who have come to him for nutrition and training advice and because of Paul's previous success in the '90's as a national motocross competitor, rated in the top ten pro-250 class in both Motocross and supercross.

Currently Paul is training several competitors for the BOP competition.  He is looking at six competitors going to the Bay's as a team ranging over several of the classes.  He is getting very excited as the Bay competition is one of the best run, with Marty and Sian from Sunny Gymz at the helm, stating that they do an awesome job with the show.

Paul Mountfort Fitness is also one of the sponsors and is pleased to be part of this outstanding competition.  Paul is extremely excited to be taking his first team to the Bay competition and is very proud of them all for putting in an awesome effort.
