More Pics and report from the NABBA BoP!

MuscleImaging also has some pics from the show up here

The sun was not only shining brightly in whakatane but it was super bright inside at the NABBA Bay of Plenty too! Why? super organiser Marty Ngaio learned that at last year's show it was a touch dark on stage but this year there was no doubt there was plenty of light on stage to see the huge number of athletes that were on display.
Marty and Lisa
That was probably the only major change from the inaugural show last year, afterall, Marty did set a pretty high bar for himself and the Sunnygymz organising team. The prejudging went like clockwork with the super efficient team backstage making sure everything was running smoothly - with the help again of the colour coded running sheet (right).  The show began at 1pm and all the 43 athletes all had been on stage and finished by 3pm.

There were lots of men in this show and only handful of figures, but great to see the large turnout of 7 in the physique women category.  The standouts for mine were the big novice athletic and physique men's classes who were notable for their condition.

The first and second in the Nov Athletic class (who coincidentally had blue trunks on) were greatly matched and it must've been a close contest. Kristian Bray who won the nov physique is having a great run this year, this was his 5th contest and has now got the record of 4 wins and 1 second. Watch out guys he still has plans for more this year.  The Open Athletic of Paul Mountford, Greg Mawson and Andrew Murray was also a highlight but it was Paul's hard and vascular physique that won it this time, but who knows what Greg and Andrew could bring when Nationals come around!

Although small in numbers, the novice figure class girls were all in great condition too.  The very tall figure of the winner was pretty sharp but couldn't hold off Teneka Hyndman who took the overall title with her symmetry and posing.  That was Teneka's 6th show and she has plans to do 15 this year!!  Stan's record of 13 last year might be broken afterall.

We can't wait to see what Marty will supersize next for his comp next year but we're sure there'll be something minor he'll want to improve on from this one. We love your perfectionist streak Marty! We couldn't stay for the night show but heard it was a great one, so here's Marty to tell you the events that unveiled.
From Marty: The Evening Show went really well without any hitches. We had a packed out theatre and the audience created an awesome atmosphere for the competitors. Adding to this atmosphere, was our MC Reuben Simanu. He did an amazing job! Also, his powerlifting demonstration mixed things up a little and wowed people with his impressive strength.

He firstly, benched 230kgs for 2, a quick interview with Peter Hardwick, then did another 250kgs for 2, followed by another quick interview. The bar was then stripped down to 140kgs for Reuben to rep out. Peter started the count and the crowd joined in and Reuben eventually pressed out 20 reps ending with a huge cheer from the audience.

Reuben and Peter

The Sunny Gymz crew did a fantastic job organising the athletes, prizes, trophies etc... which left me to focus on the logistics of the show. There were some great routines performed that night accompanied by an awesome sound system I had installed specifically for the show, which added to the atmosphere.

One stand out routine was from junior mens competitor Cody Wikingi who incorporated some great dance moves and flips in between in his poses and also won the best male routine. The best female routine went to Lyn Wright.   The Novice sections were crowd pleasers especially the athletic and physique men. Anchoring the class line ups, and crowd favourites, were the 3 Open Athletic guys (Andrew Murray, Greg Mawson and Paul Mountford) with some impressive bods on display.

Also, Teneka Hyndman's stage presence, great figure and posing was another highlight of the show.   Ending the Evening Show with the overalls gave the crowd something more to cheer about with the physique men's line up being the more competitive of the 4. Front runners for the title were Rota Elliot of Kawerau and Kristian Bray of Auckland, with Rota eventually winning.

Happy Snaps!

Units                            Corporate Rates

Standard Studio                        $110

This is a very nice motel which offers some great facilities. Pak n Save, shops, petrol stations are a 5 minute stroll up the road. The CDB and competition venue are just a 5 minute drive away.

PUMP UP ROOM

There will be an allocated pump up room back stage for the competitors at the BOP Champs. (Kindly provided by Sunny Gymz Fitness Centre). Their will be enough weights equipment on hand so no need for athletes to bring any. We'll also have mirrors and great backstage heating.

N.B: No weights equipment is to be removed from the pump-up room.

We have a pump-up room co-ordinator ‘Paul Burke' AKA ‘Paul The Geezer' who will be their helping anyone who needs a hand pumping-up. Paul will also be in close communications with our backstage marshals Paul Malcolm and Helen Pollet and like last years NABBA BOP Champs, collectively do a fantastic job organising our athletes backstage and making sure the logistics from the pump up room to there call on stage run's smoothly.

BACK STAGE PROCEDURES

We implemented a strategy last year which worked well and will be doing the same thing this year.

Athletes were advised that once they are asked to the pump up room by our back stage marshals they would have an estimated time of 10-15 mins until their class was due on stage.

N.B.: Athletes will need to be tanned and ready before they go to the pump-up room.

Our backstage marshals are Paul Malcolm (who will be sorting out the lads) and Helen Pollett (who will be sorting out the gals). These two marshals will be in continuous contact with our Stage Marshal Gary Fowell.

Our Stage marshal will try and time it so when your class is asked to the stage the transition will be straight from the pump up room and straight onto stage. Although Gary cannot predict how many rounds the head judge will run classes through, he will time it as best as possible.

In cases where your class is waiting on stage for the next class to finish, we will have portable heaters and also bands so that athletes can maintain that pump before going on stage.

Also, our two backstage marshals will be checking that all athletes have their competitor numbers on and put on the left hand side of the trunks or bikini bottoms and ensuring no competitor is chewing GUM before they go on stage.

BACKSTAGE TANNERS

We will have some experienced tanners backstage assisting anyone who needs a hand with their tanning and also giving those quick touch ups for those who require it. (Thanks to the Sunny Gymz team for assisting)

TOLIETS AND SHOWERS

Both the Men's and Women's changing room are spacious and both are equipped with toilets, showers, mirrors and heating. Athletes are NOT to use the public toilets in the main foyer of the theatre if they have applied tanning products to themselves.

HOUSE CLEANING

Once athletes have competed and would like to watch the show from the theatre, PLEASE cover up with a jersey, jacket and pants. Singlets or shorts are not acceptable as these won't stop the tanning products getting on the seats which risk us losing our bond and most importantly future hire of the venue.

POWER LIFTING DEMONSTRATION

One of New Zealand's most decorated powerlifters, Reuben Simanu, will be treating our audience to a power lifting demonstration at the evening show. Check out ‘just a few' of his power lifting achievements:

•-           5 times NZ Overall Men's 3-Lift Powerlifting Champion

•-           Oceania and Commonwealth 3-lift and Bench Press Powerlifting Champion (Record Holder)

•-           10 times NZ Men's Bench Press Champ

•-           NZ's Current Bench Press Record Holder (307kg)

•-           First man in commonwealth to bench over 300kgs

and the list just goes on and on.....................

This is a must see and we are very fortunate to have Big Reub compering the show as well.
