where do you train and how long have you been powerlifting We both train at The Powerhouse gym in Wellington, and have been Powerlifting for almost a year now - Tyler was formerly training in Muay Thai, and Kieran comes from a Rugby background. what are your best lifts in bench, deadlift and squat Our best competition lifts are: why do you feel so passionate about fundraising for the cause. As with a lot of people, we've had family members who have had to battle cancer. One afternoon we decided we'd like to do a little bit to help those in need, and we thought a good way to go about it would be to combine our passion for lifting, with a fundraising drive for the Child Cancer Foundation. what are you actually doing to fundraise and what is your $$ goal We've got a little pledge going with a few people, where for every kilo we get over our personal best lifts, they will donate a dollar - one has even pledged to match our final totals dollar for dollar, which is huge! We're using this as a motivational tool to lift a bit harder and hopefully squeeze a few more dollars into the charity. Our fundraising target for the few weeks we had is $2,000, but after the awesome response we've received so far, we're hoping we may exceed that (fingers crossed!). what has the support at your gym been like The support has been overwhelming at our gym, lots of the girls and guys have been spreading our flyer through their workplaces and social media to get the word out, as well as chucking in a few bucks here and there and just generally giving great support whenever they see us. Not only that, but the lifting community in general has been awesome - the amount of powerlifters from across the country, and lifters from other disciplines have banded together to also donate and get the word out, we are just hugely grateful for the effort everybody has invested in getting behind our cause. Have you thought about giving bodybuilding a go? and do you have much to do with bodybuilders.
Bodybuilding is something we'll both probably end up dabbling in eventually, Powerlifting seems to be a good gateway into it as we can build up a bit of size easier through it. As for what we think of Bodybuilders - with only one mirror in the Powerhouse, we don't get too many of them in our gym! But we do get along well with most (if not all) bodybuilders - there is sometimes a little friendly rivalry between the two "camps", but at the end of the day we're all there to lift weight, keep strong and be healthy, so we're happy to feed off any info we get from them.
A few of the Bodybuilders we talk to come from strength backgrounds, so they have a wealth of information to share from their experiences. And the lifts guys like Hamish C and Harry B are putting out is always good motivation - we can't have Bodybuilders outlifting us! Finally we'd also like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for the support they've offered so far, it's awesome to see the Kiwi generosity kick in for such an awesome cause. Thanks! |
