Lisa looking good 2 weeks before Universe

Universe 2009 - Southport, England

24th Oct 2009

It began with a flight to Auckland, then a 12 hour flight to Hong Kong.  Short stop over in Hong Kong then 13 hour flight to Heathrow.   We then got a cab to Windsor and stayed there for 2 days before catching 5 trains and a cab to Southport.   Arrived on the Thursday before the show.

Southport was nice, a small town by the sea where apparently many people go to retire (this soon became apparent by the population).

Most of the athletes started to pour in on Friday and by that afternoon had cleared out all of the rice crackers at the supermarket.  Lucky I had stocked up.

Friday evening we had a Anzac meeting ie  The Australian Team, and myself, being the only NZer attending the real Nabba Universe.

Show day -

Around 160 athletes throughout the whole competition with all classes being well attended.  Some amazing physiques in the mens lineups -

it would have been hard to pick the winners in some of the classes because they were all really that good.

Lisa Cross (2nd) and Lisa B

17 ladies in my class, from all over the world - France, UK, Malta, South Africa, Brazil, Australia, Israel, Sweden, Ukraine, Spain, Austria just to name a few.

This was the biggest Physique class they have had for as long as they can remember (who said Woman's Physique bodybuilding was a dying sport!!!).  Also that many of the ladies had retained  their femininity which is part of the criteria the judges look for.

I could see some fantastic physiques in our lineup and knew it was going to be tough to make the top 6.  Some of these ladies have been on the circuit for many years and what an inspiration.

    1st, Brazil           2nd, England             3rd

Pre-judging in the morning - first up we did our routines then we were all brought out and split into 3 groups and did our symmetry round and compulsory poses.

So with the pre-juding over we returned for the night show and the usual pose down, I got out there first as shortly after there wasn't alot of space left on the stage for all 17 of us.

Placings!!!!     8th out of 17 - I was extremely happy with this result, given this was only my 2nd year in Physique and first year on the Universe stage - after many years as a figure competitor - wish I had made the change to Physique years ago.

Being in this lineup has totally inspired/motivated me and was looking forward to when I returned from holiday to get back training again.   Although I did sneak in about 4 training sessions while I was away.

Lisa, day after comp looking very full after a late night McDonald's
(oops did I let that secret out? he he)

After the show we had 3 weeks in France, Italy and Germany and just the most amazing time (well deserved after many months of hard work).

Plan for competing - there a few competitions coming up which I'm very interested in but no decisions as of yet - watch this space.

Lisa @ Colosseum, Rome

27 Oct 09. There was 16 in Lisa Bailey's physique class and 170 athletes all up.  Unfortunately she didn't make the top 5 in the field of 16 but we're told she was outmassed (wow these girls must have been enormous!). A large Brazilian woman won. Lisa was very pleased with how the day went  and learnt from her experience in only her 2nd year of physique.

Better late than never! Here are a few pics of Lisa Bailey from when she won the NABBA Australian Natational Title on 12 October 09.  Lisa's off to compete in the NABBA Universe in Southport England which is held 24 October 09.

Lisa has promised to do a proper Q & A profile with us, so we look forward to that after her Universe mission.  In the meantime she would like to thank a few people along the way:

" Just a big thankyou to Nabba Australia and Graeme Lancefield for giving me the opportunity to compete within Nabba Australia and then onto the UK Universe in Southport UK on 24th Oct.   Have had a fantastic experience competing in Australia and they have been so supportive and looking forward to the Universe.

Also thanks for all our friends, Nathan, Craig, Rod, Phily just to name a few. Thanks for Hugh at High Performance Health for his sponsorship. Lastly thanking Dave my wonderful partner for all his help, support and wealth of knowledge and experience."
