Hunk of the Moment

On contest days we get a glimpse of people lives (and bodies) but we often wonder what people did away from the contest stage.

One such body we wondered about was that of Kristian Bray. He's having quite a good run on the bodybuilding circuit at the moment with 5 wins out of 6 comps so far in 2010.

On stage Kristian appears very confident, a touch of 'blue steel' in his eyes adds to the onstage presence.  But away from the stage we found out he has quite a soft creative side to him too.

Kristian Bray

By day, 31 year old Kristian works with Lifewithout Barriers. His role is to recruit, train, professionally develop and support for Foster Carers of Children in need. Kristian is also about to move into the coordination of a mentoring service that will run alongside a small independent record label to offer recording opportunities for disadvantaged youth. A move which will also combine his love of music - another string to Kristian's bow where is also a singer/songwriter and plays the guitar.

But that's not all! there's never a dull moment in Kristian's life.  He also does some part time modelling and dancing - so no wonder he's so comfy in front of the camera and an audience.  With so much going on in his life, we just had to find out how he does it all and find time for bodybuilding!

13 october Update:  Rede's made quite an impression with the ANB and has managed to scored a place on the 2011 ANB Asia Pacific Poster!  He also has a star profile in the Natural Bodz Aussie Magazine.  Go Rede!

We've come to know him as the guy with the nice 'fern' but Rede Frisby from Invercargill will also be known as the kiwi who took the u70kg Men's Title from the Australians at the ANB Australasian Champs from some pretty tough competition.

Although Rede has only competed 4 times, he's certainly made an impact at every outing gaining 1 second and 3 1st placings in his short bodybuilding career.  But Rede is not into bodybuliding to get on stage at every opportunity, he's into building his body for the long haul and believes in patience...which he's tattoed on his back for eternal reminder that this sport takes time to perfect.

In this update we find out what Rede, a Personal Trainer at his own 'Infinity Training Systems' Studio in Invercargill, has instore in his bodybuilding future and how he's going to achieve them.

18 October update:  Phil K Mastering the (NABBA) Universe!

Congratulations to Phil Kuklinski who's off to compete at the NABBA/WFF Universe in Southport on 30 October!  Phil says its been a life long dream to get to the Mr Universe contest after reading and seeing Arnie and Co in the old muscle mags way back in the 1970's when he was a teenager.
"My family laughed at me when I said that will be me one day." And look at him now, only 2 weeks until he reaches his lifetime goal.

Both Max Stott and Phil Kuklinski, 1st and 2nd in the Masters 50+ class at the NABBA/WFF Nationals Christchurch on 2 Oct, were selected to represent NZ but unfortunately Max was not able to attend. Chch athlete Steve Orton was also selected but not able to go.

Good luck Phil. Enjoy every minute of it.  You've earned it!
  June update

Former Mr New Zealand Phil Kuklinski made a surprising entry into the recent NZFBB Akl Champs competing in the Masters 50+ class. With his muscle maturity and dryness, Phil proved he still had the muscle to match it with the young guns in the overall comparisons.

Was it one hit wonder for Phil in 2010? we just had to catch up with him to find out what inspired him to don his posing trunks and will he bring them out again this year!

Greg, 04

Once a 'cuddly' chef, Greg Mawson of Napier has turned around his eating habits to cook up an athletic physique that many would envy.

But it was a different story in 04. Greg wasn't super obese but at 33%, he felt uncomfy in his body so he decided to make a change to his eating and exercise habits.

Now 6 years on, and only 2 years of competitive bodybuilding under his belt Greg has competed in nearly 20 shows and has already amassed numerous regional titles.

Soon he's off to compete in the INBA Dubbo show in Australia and then a number of NABBA shows in NZ are lined up. But first we asked Greg what it was like when he was fat and what advice he'd give to those wanting to lose weight.

Greg, 09

1. You were quite heavy before you started training and probably in bad eating habits, what sorts of food were you eating and what was your lifestyle like? did you do any exercise?
I was at the gym on and off for years just doing resistance training, mainly working the "ego" muscles.  Very seldom did I do legs!.  I was never really getting anywhere and not gauging my results.  I especially didn't have any goals.  I had no idea of what nutrition would assist at that stage other than the base they teach you from tech (I am a qualified Chef)  So I did train at the gym, probably into the overtraining category, especially as I didn't have the nutrition to make it all work.  Cardio? What was that?

2. What was your weight at your heaviest? what year was that?
I was 117kg peaking at 2004, which isn't majorly obese for my height of 185cm but I had a body fat percentage of 33%.  I "hid" it well as I am quite broad across the shoulders but I held a hell of a lot on my gut.

3. When you were 'fat', did you think you could ever look like those muscly guys on stage?
Never.  I used to look at bodybuilding magazines and dream, but also think that they aren't real people.  Or perhaps that was an excuse.  With all the lies you get from supplement adverts it's easy to think "I'll never look like that.  It won't work like that for me."  I guess it used to motivate me to doing a few abdominal sessions here and there, but still not the rest of the nutrition to make it work.
