Hunk of the Moment

Man on a Mission: Ali Alkahdi, Feb 2011

2005            2009

Sick of being picked on because of his small size at school, Ali took action and began to weight train to get big so he could seek respect from his peers.  Although initially it was about gaining size, Ali soon discovered the art of changing his body with food and weights....and a bodybuilder was born.

23 year old Ali Alkahdi has come a long way from that skinny kid holding the basketball.  Since swapping hoops for the barbell in 2005 Ali's transformed his 49kg body to a National u70kg winning physique in 2009.

After taking 2010 off to grow, Ali's back with a vengeance by starting his contest preparation last year a staggering 30 weeks before the show!  Now that's dedication and shows a young man on a mission.

In this update we catch up with Ali and find out how he manages to afford the food bill on a student budget and what long term goal he has in bodybuilding:

Study:  I am studying sport at the university of Waikato! Last year then I am off to the real world... Don't know if I should be happy or depressed, hahaha.

Where do you live and train? I train in a small gym called ‘physiques fitness', just a few minutes walk from where I live. It definitely isn't Gold's gym but it does the trick..

My Grandad never looked like this! but Peter Hunt at 53 years old is Grandad to 2 grandchildren and Dad to 3 children. The eldest is 32.

Peter's also the master of condition. Everytime he steps on stage he never disappoints the judges and audience with his sharp detail

and vascular lean condition condition. Assets which have won him 2 National Masters Titles and 2 trips to represent New Zealand at the Masters Worlds. Peter's once again off to his 3rd Masters Worlds in Turkey to be held on 11 December where he hopes to beat his previous top placing of 5th.  Judging by condition before he left, Peter should match the high quality on sharpness, its just a matter of whether how many 'monsters' will be in the lineup to overpower Peter on size.

Peter gave us an insight into how he attains his condition in our interview with him, so if you'd like to know his secret, watch the Video Here!

Thank you to Fitness247 Gym at Airport Oakes for your awesome hospitality and great gym!

Good luck Peter!

Experimental Hunk, Lloyd Shaw. Jan 2011

Looking lean and muscular, you'd think Lloyd Shaw was a regular gym goer.  But to our astonishment he hasn't pumped any iron for years!

Infact Lloyd has been undergoing a 5 year experiment that many gym junkies would run from in fear of loosing muscle mass. But Lloyd, who's one of the pioneers of vibration training, wanted to set out to find out what are the long term effects of vibration training as there has been no real long term research done on the area.

He wanted to know what effects just vibration training had on muscle mass, strength, bodyfat and cardio fitness.  Was he going to become a 60kg weakling?

In 2006, Lloyd was looking bulky and weighing 85kg with 18%. He gave up conventional weight training and began Vibration training 3 times a week.  In January 2011, Lloyd now weighs around 79kg and 10% but he will once again get tested in April 2011 for his bodyfat, muscle mass and VO2 max to see precisely what Vibration training has done to his mass and fitness.

Although we have featured vibration training on this site, we haven't exactly delved into the workings of vibration training so we thought who better to ask than the person who's a leader in the area.

So here is our Q&A with Lloyd about Vibration Training and the effects of the experiment on his body so far:

1. You're one of the pioneers of Vibration Training, what made you come up with the idea for your platform and who was your intended market?

I am a mortician by trade, specializing in obesity cases. I simply got sick of hearing nothing could be done for people over a certain weight. After doing some research into vibration therapy I decided to build the first Vibration Training machine that worked effectively over 80kg. My goals was simple at the time, get people who didn't want to move, to move. Kind of a form of forced exercise.

I initially didn't want to set up a whole company, I was forced to because no-one else would. I would have preferred a more advisory role but it didn't work out that way. " If you want some thing done properly etc etc ......  "

Scary Hunk, Steve Orton, Nov 10

Steve Orton is not a scary guy but its a scary thought to imagine just how this junior bodybuilding Champ will look in a few years time. The 2009-10 season was only the first year of competition for Steve and during that time he's already won 3 overall titles and came close to edging out one of the world's top physiques at the NZFBB Elite show in 2009.

At 20 years of age, Steve stands at 5'9" and currently weighs in at 119kg. The scary thing is, he has a goal of reaching 128kg as his maximum weight during the offseason!
