Hunk of the Moment

Marvellous Mose!

January 07
Mose Petaia would probably admit he was more chunky than hunky 2 years ago. But after years of overeating and the thought of dying young like his Dad, Mose's turned his life around.

He began his journey at the start of 07 and lost 42kg to compete in his first Club Physical Bodybuilding Champs in Aug 08.

So lets find out how Mose shaped himself into our hunk!

 1. What sorts of food were you eating before you did your first 12 week challenge?
I use to eat highly processed/ fatty food. One of my favourites would be corned beef with onions on a large bed of rice.

For breakfast I would have 4-6 full slices of white bread with heaps of butter, jam and peanut butter.

I basically ate heavy 4 times a day when I felt a little hungry but mainly when I was bored. Food became an escape, feeding the emotions rather than using food as a fuel source. I basically ate myself to obesity.

Dave Weeks

Would you buy a car from this man? well ofcourse you would wouldn't you ladies?  Hunky Dave is 34 years old and runs a car yard in Grey Lynn Auckland with his one of his brothers. All up he has 4 older brothers who happen to be quite an athletic lot. 3 of them have run marathons and 2 of them are tri-athletes who have completed Taupo Ironman (that race is nuts! says Dave). Kerry did ironman this year in 10 hours 3 min, and is doing Ironman Australia in December in the hope of going under 10 hours.

Needless to say fitness is in Dave's genes and it shows in his athletic physique, which he will be showing at the NABBA Wellington Champs on 10 October. Dave is about 170 cm tall, 75 kg normally (around 5% bodyfat) and just under 70kg when competing (2%).

Tony and Johnson's Mandates

Everybody needs an extra push now and again. Even long time trainers like Tony Liga Liga and Johnson Reihana need it to get that extra edge in their bodybuilding goals.

So every Sunday for the past month, Tony and Johnson have been having mandates. No, not a latte in Ponsonby but hardout weight training sessions to push each other so they can get more from their training.

Christopher Chase, 2009

At the NZFBB Auckland Champs in 08, it was his wife Raechelle that took the stage and the Overall Title.  This year it was the turn of her other half Christopher to take the stage and Chase (sorry had to be said!) the elusive title.

It was Chris's return after 14 years to the stage and he was up against some big seasoned competitors Nathan O'Hearn and Johnson Reihana in the Open Men o90kg. But despite the time away, Chris proved to himself that he still had the size and condition needed in this competitive class.

In this article we find out how Chris coped with pre contest, this time round with family duties and any plans for him and Raechelle to ultimately compete together.

Christopher Chase

1 How long has it been since you last competed?  Why did you want to compete again?
My last contest was the 1996 NABBA World Champs in Germany, I came 7th out of 22 in the Medium / Tall class and was even called out with the 2nd and 3rd place getters, I had just turned 22 and it had been my goal to win nationals and turn pro from the age of 16!

That was about 14 Years ago now and my goals have changed although I still want to win the NZ Nationals one year, I'm not interested in turning pro, at this comp I really just wanted to prove to myself that I could come back and be better than my previous best (which I think I achieved).

2. Was it harder this time round as you now have a family to work around? How did you work around them?
It was harder from a time management point of view but then again doing anything for yourself is harder with young kids. I didn't want to be selfish so I found myself doing most of my contest prep either when they slept or when they were at daycare, which is only 3 times a week. My family life
didn't suffer but I pretty much stopped going to work LOL.

3 What was the hardest part about competing? mental or physical
For me definitely physical I was very sick with Glandular fever for about the last 3 months, which I didn't find out until a couple of weeks out from the competition date. I'm glad I didn't get diagnosed earlier or I probably would not have gone through with it.

There were times I literally couldn't eat and subsequently I ended up smaller than I had planned to. On a few occasions Raechelle thought I might need an ambulance. We would be training and I would do a set and then have to lie on the floor and try not to vomit. I was dizzy and felt like death. I thought it must be due to my dieting. Little did I know I actually had glandular fever!
