Can you spot our Wonder Woman in the photo on the right?
you'd have to look pretty hard to see that nestled in amongst her 5
children is the amazingly youthful figure of Rose Hyde - who turns
40 on 9th April!
Although Rose is a relative novice to competitions, she's already
competed in 4 Shape comps with NABBA in 2008. And judging by her
goals this year, she's only just starting her competition journey
showing that age is not a hurdle to competitive bodybuilding.
In this update Rose shares with us how she copes with juggling her
family commitments with her own training needs, and her very unique
dieting regime! |

*Occupation:full time mum.
Obviously I spend alot of time at the gym, my family reckon I might
as well work there. I might look into doing some sort of
training/course while I'm still at home for when I get back
into the workforce.
*Family: married to derryn Hyde who I
met when I was 14.
*We have 5 kids;
- Jami 19
she belongs to a local hiphop krew Fearless who won Bronze
medals at the world hiphop champs 2007 in L.A.
- Louis 17
he's my I.T computer guy
-
Chantelle 16
still at high school 6th form
- Caleb 13
just started high school
-
Hemi 10 home
schooled.
* What do your children think of you
competing and being up on stage?
My children have never
been to any of my competitions they have watched me on dvd. a
couple of them said if I wanted them there for support they would
come. my sons seem to have picked up eating eggs and if I have
protein shakes I have to make enough for them as well, plus
they all want gym memberships. They have grown up seeing me perform
at different events/shows locally it's just
abit weird now because of the skimpy costumes.
* Have you always been into
fitness?
No, the
thought never crossed my mind that I might want to
compete in bodybuilding. I
started up at the Profiles gym here in Rotorua 2006 for
fitness & to get in better shape started with les mills
classes then my hubby taught me abit about weights and what to do
with them.
My body seemed to respond fairly well started to get muscle
tone and people in the gym were suggesting I try competing so
I went to the 2007 B.O.P nabba comp and decided to aim
for next years comp Shape catergory which was my first comp I came
2nd to Teresa but there were only 2 of us lolz. |

* What aspect of competing did I find most
challenging?
The hardest
thing preparing for my first comp was the diet/eating and because I
did everything myself, no trainer, no nutrionist. That
made things abit more tricky. I learnt the poses off the
Go figure site through Teresas' lil video
clip.
I also
borrowed a friends North Harbour 2007 dvd I would play it in the
lounge and pretend I'm on stage with everyone and go thru the
compulsory/symetry poses.
I did a year
of jazz/ballet when I was 20 stopped had 4 kids went back and did
another year till I was interrupted by child number 5 then
completed another 4 years so I'm sort of used to performing but the
scary part is doing it half naked especially when this maori girl
never wears a bikini let alone perform in one.
|
* What are your contest achievements so
far?
I did 4 comps last year, all in NABBA Shape class.
Placed 2nd at the B.O.P.
3rd at Waikato, did this
comp to try and gain more confidence and experience before
Nationals (It's hard
to relax & smile when I'm freakin out & everyone's looking
at you).
- 2nd at Nationals
- 1st at North

* What are you competition plans this
year?
-
Asia/Pacific April 11th sounds like fun first international type
comp.now I got the invite just organising my
"tribe".
- Nabba
B.O.P gotta support my own region there seems to be a few more
competitors coming from Rotovegas this year so yay!
-
INBA Taupo
Those are
definites might add others if I'm up to it and it's not too much of
a strain on the family which brings me to your next
question.
* How do I juggle your family
commitments and training for a comp?
Very badly
hehe, At times I'm doing an onto job the house is organised
teas ready everybody's schedules are streamlined Housework's
done and I get to my workouts and then there's days when I've
bitten off more than I can chew usually as a competition gets
nearer.
* How do you cope with naughty
temptations such as biscuits and chocolates which might be in the
cupboard for your family and children?
Coping with temptations can be hard especially when you first start
but your body gets used to the diet change plus you generally
feel better for it. To be honest I cope with denying myself certain
foods because my treat is eating chocolate (Moro Gold mini
bars) I probably have 6-8 bars a day they are 14g each when comp
gets closer I might cut that down to 3-4.naughty aye.
* What would be your typical day
in your contest diet? A typical day for me pre-contest
wise is:
6am Cardio 45mins-1hr mix of run/bike/walk/cross trainer
7.30am Breakfast 3egg whites 1yolk, wholegrain toast banana,
tea/coffee/chocolate
10.00am snack fruit
12.30pm lunch protein/veges beef stir fry is my
favourite I get bored of chicken/tuna fast
3pm snack cuppa/choc lolz
5pm weights 45mins (chest/shoulders & back once a week
legs twice, now & then bi's/tri's) cardio 1hr
7pm Tea protein/veges
9pm snack cuppa/choc |

Rose @ NABBA Nationals |
I'm not a strict follower of the diet if I'm out
having coffee, I might share a cake or if the family are
having takeout a couple of chips or coke depending on how I'm
progressing obviously get stricter on myself if I feel I'm
slacking and need to get back on track. I've even been caught
out clubbing a week before competition 5hrs dancing seemed a much
more interesting way of getting the cardio done plus it broke the
whole mundane boring routine of diet/exercise.
* Will you eventually graduate into
figure or are you quite happy in Shape? What do you like
about competing in the shape class? I would love to
give figure a go one day I guess shape was a gentle way of
introducing the dieting/exercising involved I would obviously need
to clean up my diet.I love shape I quite like the athletic look
without having to be shredded I get to keep some bad eating
habits and because
of the creativity needed for the routine as
it's judged I thought it suited me.
* What advice would you give to Mums
who want to compete? Get in there and do it,
get help and support if you need it.
I think people should not fear things so much, put your best foot
forward and give things a go.
I really admire people who put themselves out there and at least
try.
It sounds cliche but I think it's a waste not to do things you're
capable of. My dad used to dance and run marathons till he
ended up in a wheelchair. He still has a go getta
attitude but has new challenges to face.
