I've had quite a gastronomic weekend and I've got the tight waistband prove it! First up Lisa Bellingham spoiled me with a super early birthday breakfast shout at the Langham hotel.  Its not actually my birthday for another 5 weeks but Lisa B thought since the Women's show was cancelled and there might not be another free weekend before my real birthday, this was probably a good time to catch up properly rather than just passing each other at the show.

So off we went to the Langham hotel to be tempted by all the mouth watering delights of a breakfast buffet.  We didn't make the mistake of sitting too close to the buffet as it would be way too tempting to reach over to the food too often if it was too close.

Being about 10 metres away also meant we got to do some cardio to work off the food we just ate and since I was too lazy to go back and forth too often, I saved myself a few cals by not going up to buffet for extra food.

The next trick in not overindulging is not filling up on carbs first.  I know alot of you out there love your carbs and probably go for the cereals, fruit and bread first. But if you're watching what you're eating and your waistline, go for the protein - this is usually in the hot section - to fill you up first.  I went for smoked salmon, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, scrambled eggs (scrambled is a treat when you're used to having microwaved egg whites!) and I had some gluten free toast.   I can't process bread very well and I don't like pastries or fruit, so I really didn't end up having much carbs.

Lisa B on the hand went to town, man that girl can eat.  She had similar to me but added pancakes, a couple of chocolate pastries and fruit.  Oh the advantages of being tall. Whereas being short like me just squashes all that fat to the middle!

I did get my carb calories though - from chocolate!!!!  I wasn't expecting it but Lisa organised a chocolate decorated dish with some fancy chololates on it for my birthday.  So glad it wasn't a proper cake as they'd been way more calories in that!!   It was great breakfast catch up and thanks to Lisa for reminding me this far out how I'm going to be another year older.

That buffet was my treat meal for the week.  I usually allow myself an indulgence each week and after I've had it I still eat normal meals during the day.  I  know some girls easily fall off the wagon and continue to indulge the whole day thinking since they've gone overboard in one meal they may as well continue.  Sure it won't blow the diet but it'll probably affect your mindset for the following day and making you go overboard with your cardio to compensate.

So if you want to be in a good headspace.  Indulge in your treat meal, then just continue what's on your diet plan in your following meals.  There's no need to skip a meal or 2, or decarb to compensate.  You'll end up hungry the next day and might just grab some treats again and the cycle continues.

Wheat free, gluten free, yeast free, dairy free, preservative free, egg free. If you had any intolerance of any kind and wanted a feed, this was where you wanted to be!
The Auckland Gluten and Food Allergy Show.

I also went to check out the Auckland Gluten and Allergy Food Show. So I had to have two treat sessions this weekend, oh the sacrifices I make to bring you news!!!!

Since I do suffer from food intolerances mainly dairy and wheat, I thought it would be interesting to go to the show to see what's out there and find out how people who have more allergies than me cope with their food issues.

There were exhibitors from all sectors of the allergy fields from organisations who help with diagnosis, dealing with allergies in the home to the many food exhibitors that gave out tastings.

Its amazing all the products that have sprung up to cater for this market which included cookies, cakes, sauces, pizzas, protein bars, chips, bread mixes, soy milk, rice milk, oat milk, wontons and probably my favourite - rice flakes.  I'm not great with oats so I enjoy eating rice flakes with my protein powder for breakfast, which I found were on sale at the show, bargain!!

I had a gret time sampling all the food on offer. Most of the processed food was soy based.  Good if you don't have soy allergy or intolerance otherwise you'd have a hard time eating at this food show!

I'm not dieting so I didn't feel I couldn't enjoy myself. At the same time, I wasn't a pig and scoffed all the sample plates either!  amongst all the chips, biscuits, sauce samples I spotted a nutrition bar stand.  So ofcourse I had to stop by and see another bar coming into the NZ market.

This one's called PureFit and its wheat free, gluten free, dairy free, usually when a bar's free of all the additives 'we love', they tend to be quite dry but surprisingly this one wasn't too bad. There was almond crunch, berry almond crunch, peanut butter crunch and my pick of the bunch - chocolate brownie.

One thing to remember about all these gluten free, dairy free, yeast free products is that they still have calories!  sure they're marketed as being 'healthier' since they don't contain as much additives but they still have plenty of fat and sugar.

So you still need to be just as careful about how much you eat of the delcious little gluten free biscuits, chips and cakes.  I admittedly probably had too many samples and way over my sugar limit for the day, oh well there's always cardio tomorrow!!!  it was worth it.
