Its been two years since we saw the gorgeous little figure of SportsModel competitor Nuria Novoa but wait no more! Christchurch's pocket rocket is back and ready to jump back into action at the NABBA/WFF contest on 1 May.

She has had a set back with a knee injury but she's managing to work around that, and an extremely busy University schedule, to participate in the sport she loves.

Here we ask how she's coping with everything!

 1. when was last time you competed and why are you making a comeback?

My last show was Nabba in April 2008 (Fitness Model Class). The reason I haven't been competitive at anything since then is I ruptured my ACL while coaching sport aerobics in late 08 and due to my extreme flexibility they had to repair this with the patella tendon rather than hamstring making rocvery and rehab post surgery more painful and drawn out.

I've really missed being competitive, I'm getting back to the stage where I can push myself again. I'm training in a gym with a great enviroment - Canterbury Sports Performance Center in ChCh (which is home to clubs such as eatside barbell and eastside strong man), which has been a great change for me. Everyone is relaxed, friendly and nothing but positive and supportive of all other memebrs so it's a great place to train when wanting to get results. I believe they will have a sponsors stand at the show :)

2. how did you mentally get over the fact you can't do all the physical stuff you used to prior to your knee surgery. Were you bit down on yourself for a while?

I saw a psychologist weekly for 4 months as a way of trying to cope with an injury affecting my job, passion and stress relief for a period of time, that didn't help a lot. I have no idea how I'd ever cope with a more serious injury I'll put it that way!
Once my knee was a bit stronger I started boxing training, which was a total saviour. I could not yet dance or do aerobics to my usual level but box I could! This is something I want to do at a competitive level too, so I have some thinking to do regarding that and competing in fitness!

3. what are you studying at Uni and how do manage to work in all the mealtimes when you need to go to lectures etc. Take food in with you?

I started off at Uni last year thinking I would do a Bachelor of Social work which is a 4 year degree. I have since changed to a BA in Psychology and am in the process of deciding which path to go down for further psychology. I am meeting a professor this week to disscuss a 3rd year Sports Psych paper :)

This semester I am only doing 2 papers so my timetable hasnt been hard to manage re food. Mondays & wednesday are the only days I have to be at uni for whole days, other times I'm only gone for a few hours. Shakes, tuna, chopchop chicken and corn thins I find are all great for taking anywhere! I also try and have a good meal right before I leave and one prepared for when I get home to save time.

  4. we know that in the past you had quite a sweet tooth, how have you overcome that this time since you're limited to how much you can do cardio with your knee.

Haha, did you also know I have a savoury tooth?! I love food, my father is Spanish so I was taught about food being part of bonding, culture, happiness etc. I will always appreciate good food and wine especially over company, however I find my mindset completely changes while getting ready for a show. I cook and eat very plain food, if i think about it too much I'll want something else so i just tick off protein carbs and vegies eat it and carry on.

5. what are you looking forward to most about your comeback?!

I'l be honest here - I'm looking foward to it but more so the possibilities of more shows later this year rather than this one in particular. I know this isn't likely to be a personal best for me physique wise, I would've liked 20 weeks to prepare but heard about it at 16 weeks, my thighs were 3.5cm different at 15 weeks out, and I havent been able to train as hard for as long or often as I used to.

I am hoping that will not be the case for long and I see this show as a good chance to get myself back into competiting and working towards gals again. I hope people will enjoy my routine performance, I think I will enjoy it anyway haha!

Another of the reasons I wanted to do this show was to support Kingsley Hannah and Dave Smith for organising this (and thank you to anyone else involved also!) I think this federation will be able to offer more to athletes and know I will certainly think about doing more of their shows both in NZ and australia.

6. more than likely you'll be the only competitor in your sportsmodel class, does it bother you to compete by yourself and would you say to encourage more girls to do this class.

It doesnt bother me to not have competition, and if there was competition that wouldnt bother me either. My big goal for each show is present a nice total package, regardless of whether or not there may be competition.

A fit and athletic physique is important but this is not a bodybuilding class. I believe the routine should be a main focus and show balanced flexibility on both sides, blanced strength moves and jumps, as should presentation (hair, tan, accessories, props, facial presentation etc).
We have NO SHORTAGE of girls who have the physical skills to do well in this class, plenty of ex competitive sport aerobics girls are floating round out there! Many have far better skill levels than I do, but I don't think it's the training or performing that doesn't appeal to some girls it's probably the diet/lifestyle.

When I was training for aerobics I'd have chocolate bars most days of the week, junk food regularly eat and drink and be merry yet the 15 plus hrs of training a week meant it never showed, I had to put a leotard on yes, but no one was judging me on my bodyfat. I do miss competiting in a sport that is judged on performance rather than appearance, however both have their pros and cons, and it would be awesome to see more girls giving fitness a go!
