Almost a year after turning Pro, christchurch figure Kristy Thomson is finally about to make her Pro debut at the IFBB Australian Pro on 12 March in Melbourne.  Stepping foot on stage at the Pro show will be the culmination of a 10 year journey that Kristy began as a junior competitor in 2000.

At 5' (and a half), weighing 48-49kg on stage, Kristy displays an athletic figure and a set of shoulders that many athletes are envious of. Its with these assets that has seen Kristy has rise through the ranks of local and national competitions winning in novice and open categories in Figure and Bodyfitness classes.

We catch up with Kristy 3 weeks before her Pro debut and find out what thoughts are going through her mind!
1. At what moment in your bodybuilding career did you think you might want to become a Pro figure athlete?
I wanted to become a figure pro right from the moment I started competiting in 2000 as a junior competitor

2. Do you have past/present figure athletes you’ve modeled your figure on?
Yes I use to model myself on Lisa Massons figure and now I like Heather May French as she is the same height and I think she has a great package, I also like Jennifer Gates

3. You’ve already had a sample of what it might be like to compete in an international show when you did the Arnold Amateur in 2010. What was that experience like and what did you learn for your Pro debut?

I loved the Arnolds, it was amazing and one of the best weeks of my life. I learnt a lot from it, How to present better with hair and make up and how to carry yourself better on stage and just to look as feminine as possible and also thats its always been about being the best you can be(which ive always tried to do, but Amercian girls are just another level:)

4. Are you feeling nervous as you’re now close to your pro debut?
Yes I am, but I know when I stand up there that ive done my very best and hopefully they like what they see.

5. What do you think it’ll be like when you finally line up on stage with the rest of the Pros?

I will have nerves and I will also think, wow these are girls I have seen in magazines for years and are the best in the world. It will be great to have just been able to experience doing a pro show and reaching that goal.

6. When did you decide to compete at the Melbourne show? I was thinking about it before xmas and started dieting then. As for the last year I have always tried to stay around 5 to 6kg of show weight (and had xmas off then after xmas started the diet.).

Can you just give us a typical day in your pre contest prep:
Cardio.
As the weeks go on things change, Ill start of with half hour cardio am then as weeks go on 45 mins am then two half hours am and pm or one hour am and then closer to show like 6 weeks out its a lot around and hour and a half aday, sometimes two hours:)

What bodyparts do you train each day. For years I did a three day split:
Monday: Abs, Back and Biceps.
Day two Chest,Abs and Triceps
Three, Legs and Shoulders

But for this one, Ive done 5 Days of weights reps depending on program, 10-15 reps per set and 5 sets per body part like back would be 25 sets and 10-12 reps,
Day One Back and hamstrings,calfs
Day Two Chest.
Day Three, Arms.
Day Four Shoulders,
Day Five Total legs and abs,but mainly hamstrings for legs.

With such a hard pre contest regime what supplements do you take to help you recover?

I'm lucky that I get sponsored by Optimum Nutrition and get to use the products in their big line.  I use:

Optimum nutrition whey gold standard
Optimum nutrition glutamine
Optimum nutrition carnitine
Optimum nutrition zma
Optimum nutrition cla
Optimum nutrition threshold
Optimum nutrition bcaa
Optimum nutrition optimum women multi
Optimum nutrition thermocuts

The idea behind this program was to speed up recovery and therefore muscle gain plus reduce fat storage enabling the body to use it for energy.

 7. What aspects of your figure have you been working on in preparation for your Pro Debut?
Everything (Ithink you can always be better) but mainly, hamstrings, shoulders and back

8. Not only do you a Personal Trainer, but also a hairdresser. How do you manage to have the energy for your own training especially on your tired days?

Im really lucky I sleep usually anywhere from 8 to 10 hours a night on tired days, caffiene and herbal tea is great and sometimes an extra multi vitamin helps, Ive always been a busy person so I quess I am use to it, but yes it does get very tiring, but its my choice I tell myself and its all in the head:)

9. What would be your advice to some of the up and coming novice and open figure girls who have a dream of being a Pro figure competitor?

My advice would be to them be patience, muscle takes years to put on and work your way up through the classes. When I was 19 and started doing shows I wanted to look like a pro ,but this takes years and make sure you have a very experienced personal trainer(as I have had in the past)who has competed lots and looked good in shows . Start competing with NZIFBB(federation) they are a wonderful federation and you are able to turn pro through them if you do well in there shows.
