Janere Reid
When Janere Reid walked on stage at the NZIFBB Auckland Champs in May this year with her full muscled figure and great symmetry, everybody thought 'wow who is this girl' and where is she from???.

We've been on a fact finding mission and found out that Janere is a kiwi living in Adelaide Australia and is quite an accomplished figure.  Since her first contest as a sportsmodel in 2006, she's progressed to win overall figure titles in the INBA, WNBF and NABBA/WFF organisations in South Australia.
Coupled with her accomplishments on stage, 41 year old Janere is also solo Mum, successfuly raising 2 teens aged 14 and 18 year olds on her own. But that's not all!  She also works as a Personal Trainer at World Gym.

In this update we ask Janere what inspired her to compete at the Auckland Champs and will we see her compete here again.  Plus she gives us a peek at her contest training and diet, and also gives advice on how to stick to your diet plans.
Can you give us a brief history of yourself and how did you end up in Adelaide?

Born in Auckland, NZ my mother was Maori and my father Australian. We travelled backwards and forwards from NZ to Australia during my of my childhood. I school mainly in NZ and when I turned 18 I left and moved to Adelaide, Australia on my own.

Have you always been into fitness and exercise? What did you do before bodybuilding? Since a child I have always been active. Loving track and field, gymnastics, tennis, netball and even part of a marching band!! Anything that would keep me moving. I found it very hard to keep still, and still do!

What inspired you to take up bodybuilding in the first place? When did you start weight training for bodybuilding or have you always done it.

I started Bodybuilding around 10yrs ago. I was "exercising" at a corporate club, clearly more for the social aspect as i really had no idea what I was doing. I just enjoyed the spas afterwards! :)

My boyfriend at the time decided to teach me how to train for hypertrophy (bodybuilding). My body loved it and I quickly started gaining muscle. I felt great and havent looked back since.

How many years have you been competing and your achievements?

I have competed for 5yrs taking one year off in 2008 due bursitis in my shoulder. I injured it in competing in the Gladiators series here. Alot of rehab and a year off from training.

First time NZ saw you was at the NZIFBB Auckland Champs.  What made you decide to pop over and do that show?

I was actually prepping for the NABBA/WFF Southerns here in Qld at the time. i plan was to qualify for the World titles there. I re-thought this after seeing some photos from the show i had just done 2weeks prior and to my shock I realised how much muscle i had gained that off-season.

Knowing I would have to come in even harder for the Southerns, I started to worry I was losing my feminity, something I never wanted to lose and vowed to keep.

Its funny how things happen, because it was about this time that i was approached by NZIFBB and invited to compete at the Auckland titles, and I thought, what better way to keep my feminity AND represent my homeland! It was the best decision I have made in my contest career. Ive never been happier.

What contest are you currently preparing for now? And are you coming in with a different look than the Auckland show ie weight wise, muscle conditioning different?

Yes, I began prep this week for the NZIFBB Nationals and my aim is to come in a little more conditioned and make some slight changes with shape. I learned alot from my 1st show and know now what the IFBB are looking for and want to get it right this time around :)

What is a typical day in the life of Janere from getting up, work, family, going to bed?!!.

Well, minus 4mths of the year im usually in comp prep so my day usually starts at 5am. I shower and get ready for work and make lunch for my son. 6am Im at the gym doin cardio till 645 when i have breakfast.

Works starts at 7 where i will train a few clients till 830am. I then train till 930 and start training clients again till around 12. By now im tired so i head home for a nap (10mins) I catch up on housework, paperwork, emails, meal prepping and making dinner for my son, till around 4 then head BACK to work for cardio sesh no.2.

I start work again 530 till around 8-9pm Then its home again to rest so i can do it all again! :) I take Wed mornings off for me time and never work Fri nights or weekends as this is my family and friends time :)

What is a typical week in your pre contest training programme?

I'm a big fan of mixing things up and training according to recovery so no week is every really the same. I am however, always looking to perfect shape so focus on my weakness is always a must. This is what I am doin at the moment.

Mon:   Hams and glutes 3 exercises /3 sets/ 10-12 reps
Tues:  Back and tris 3-4 exercises/3sets/10-12 reps
Wed:   Off
Thurs: Quads, calves, abs 3 exercises/3sets/10-12 reps
Fri:     Delts, chest, bi's 3-4 exercises/3sets/10-12 reps
Sat:    Off
Sun:   Off

What is your typical contest diet?

I keep my diet VERY bland. I find it easier to stick to and much easier prep-wise not to have too much variety.

Breakfast:             oats, protein shake
Morning tea:          chicken/turkey/kangaroo/tuna with rice/sweet potatoe and veg/salad
Lunch:                    same again
Arvo tea:                same again minus the carbs
Dinner:                   same again minus the carbs
Evening snack:      protein shake if up 3hrs after last meal

Do you take a lot of supplements during pre contest and which ones are essential for you?

Yes I take essentials. Protein, bcaa's, glutamine, flaxseed, vit c, and a multi v. I do use a thermo depending on energy levels.

Do you give yourself and treat meals while in precontest diet? What do you consider a treat.
Definately! Im a sweet tooth so I'll eat a fairly clean meal and have a desert and a glass of wine. Obviously, these are cut out nearing then end of my prep depending on how im tracking but usually give myself at least a week without a cheat to clean my system so that the load takes better.

How do you know you're on track with your fat loss. By scales or how you look?  When do you know you're not quite on target
I do admit I weigh every morning on rise just for curiosity sake (dont tell my clients that!), but I determine by look. I know my body pretty well now to know what needs doing week to week to achieve what needs to be done.

What advice would you give novices who might find it hard to focus on sticking to their diets?
Dont forfeit your treat meal! Its the only thing that keeps you going and your body needs it. Its spikes your metabolism and especially important for woman, it helps keep your hormones in balance.

The same goes for forfeiting carbs. Taper them down, dont cut them out too soon. Alot of people think doing this will get you faster results when in fact the opposite occurs. You put you body in a state of "fight or flight" and it will combat weightloss and put ur body in unnecessary fatigue. Remember, a happy body = faster, easier results!

Have you had a role model who's inspired you?
Absolutely! Every year I give myself a new challenge with something different to rise to. I try and find someone with that quality and strive to look like them. This year that person is Nicole Wilkins-Lee :)

What's your ultimate goal in Bodybuilding?
My ultimate goal is to obtain my Pro-Card and represent NZ at the Olympia!!
(by next year!)

What advice would you give to women who want to compete?
Never give up! Find your inspiration, see it, feel it and focus on it every single time you step in the gym and pick up those weights or set foot on that treadmill. Not everyone will see your vision at first, so be ready for all sorts of negativity and even hurdles. USE this to push even HARDER, and when you step up on stage, realise and be proud of the determination and discipline it took to get there.

Its takes a special kind of person to achieve this goal but its worth every single sacrifice and every ounce of sweat. It  makes you stronger as a person not only physically but mentally. Nothing else will make you become who you really are like the sport of bodybuilding.

Once you have made it through comp prep and have stepped up on stage, I guarantee, you'll never be the same again.

ENJOY!! :)
