This update comes from Nuria Novoa and her amazing client Christchurch teacher and bikini/ figure athlete Aimee Bonner. Aimee Bonner is one of the most resilient clients I have worked with, and it’s for this reason I thought she would make a great Wonder Woman! We all know Christchurch has had a traumatic time since Sept 2010. |

Having stayed there until after the Feb 2011 quake myself & with regular visits home I know how big the stress levels have been for many people. Being scared for your life more than once and wandering around aimlessly on bad (shaky) days just waiting for the next one is a horrible thing to have experienced. |
Amazingly, earthquakes are only one of many challenges Aimee has had thrown her way while she has been preparing for shows. She also had one wrist in a brace for a month, kidney infections, two general anesthetic operations to remove an infection in her leg, asthma & pneumonia requiring weeks of prednisone, a family home twice filled with liquefaction... it sounds never ending! | |

To have not only got through all this but have competed in 3 shows AND improved in each one is nothing short of amazing. Aimee is an inspiration to myself & all the ladies in Team NfusioN & I’m sure her story will inspire others out there too so I really wanted to share it! Aimee’s Story so far! I wasn’t always overweight; in fact I was a size 8 until I was about 18 years old. It was in my early twenties that I piled on the kilos. By the time I was 25 I was over 100kg. In fact I’m not sure what my starting weight was as stopped weighting myself at 100kgs. I was on a lot of medication for my kidney and seriously unhappy. I wore size 16- 18 clothes and in fact I remember them being tight and going to Glassons and not being able to buy anything. left: Aimee in a cast one week before her first comp |
What made me change? I walked into a brand new gym and joined on 1st March 2010. That was my first step towards change. I remember thinking I must be really fat if I couldn’t even run. I decided I needed a trainer to support me so I made had a program of cardio and weights and started doing half an hour of cardio 3 times a week and weights twice a week. It was hell. I’d never been into exercise and I’d never been at a gym before. Those first few weeks I remember wanting to give up. But something made me stick to the program and within the first month I had lost about 5kg. Each month I lost between 3-4kg, I kept going and by the end of the year I was 65kg. I remember that was my goal for Christmas last year, so depending on my competing weight at one point I was 40kg smaller than when I first started. I tried to eat healthy and drink more water, and I ate smaller meals 5-6 times a day. |
How did I meet Nuria? With her help I competed in both Nabba/wff and Nzifbb – 3 shows in 2011. It hasn’t been easy thing to do in Christchurch. The stress of the earthquakes made it difficult to train, and I got sick a lot. All the small details were explained, like the right bikini, jewelry, tan, shoes and makeup. Nuria also made sure I looked my best on stage with posing prep. Nuria has also become a good friend in the process :) When I look back on photos of me competing I don’t recognize myself.
My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner; muscle growth doesn’t happen overnight and sometimes I get frustrated at not being able to see change in my body. I now train at the gym 5-6 times a week. I lift heavy weights and I enjoy it. I’ve made it part of my lifestyle. It’s now almost 2 years since I first started my weight loss and fitness journey. I’m off all medication for my kidney and I’m excited about what the future may bring. |
