Former National Senior Physique Champs Sheryl Summers of Napier looked fantastic as she competed (and won) the Women's Senior Physique at the recent NZFBB Nth Island Champs in Masterton. But little did we know of the pain she endured in the months and years leading up to the comp!

In 2004, while out training for the Round Taupo Cycle Race, she was knocked off her cycle by a small truck.

From the accident she suffered severe compound fractures in one leg (the doctors thought that there were about 10 to 12 bits of bone floating around in her leg. The leg was too bad for a normal cast and it had to be pinned with external frames (see the picture). Her arm also needed pins to hold it while it healed. The frame on her leg stayed there for nearly 6 months. Within 3 mths of the accident Sheryl was taking part in a fundraising row and managed to row non-stop for an hour. Once the frame was removed the rehab started and later in 2005 Sheryl did complete the round Taupo Cycle Race.
