We've noticed the Fitness class has been lagging behind in competitor numbers at recent NABBA events and we'd also like to see fitness back on the NZFBB programme. So with that in mind we think its time we need to do something about it to get more girls to get back into fitness. Afterall, who will if us girls don't do it for ourselves!

To encourage more girls to compete in this exciting and energetic class we've called in the enthusiastic, dynamic and ever smiling Nuria Novoa of Christchurch to tell us more about what's involved in training and preparing for the fitness class.

Nuria is well qualified to give us the basics of this class. Nuria has choreographed for/ coached sport aerobics athletes & dancers since 2002. In that time her team have achieved many successes, including gold and silver medals and regional & national championships. Nuria has represented NZ in sport aerobics and at the NABBA world championships 2005 in the shape class. Last year she won the Christchurch Classic in Shape and placed 2nd at the NABBA Nationals.

Nuria will be writing about different elements of Fitness training and contest preparation. However, we'd also like to do a workshop in the future if we can generate more interest from you girls out there!

So here we go, Part 1 - Fitness Routines by Nuria

Three Tips!
1 - Choose a Theme
2 - Show a variety of elements
3 - Presentation!

1 - Chose a Theme...
Having a theme to work around will make planning or learning, and performing your routine heaps of fun for you, and will make it more entertaining for the audience to watch!

You could use a theme simply as a nice touch wihtout going all out, or you could really get into it using music, costume, acting, props etc! Some examples...

* Latin - find some latin music, throw in a few latin dance moves and use red & gold colours for your costume!

* Chose a theme froma movie/ TV show/ Book/Take on a character!
For example - I did a Barbie themed routine for my fitness routine at the NABBA show in ChCh on May 27th. I used "Barbie Girl" by Aqua for my music, found myself a blonde wig (being naturally quite dark!), and went for hot pink and sparkly with my costume!

2 - Show a variety of elements
FLEXIBILITY / SKILL / INTENSITY ...
A great fitness routine should be balanced and include moves to show these elements. While not everyone is naturally skilled enough in all areas to include difficult moves from each of these groups, there are definately tricks and flash moves you can include in your routine to make it look impressive!

Having a high intensity/impact routine will make it impressive to watch! The main way to achieve high intensity is through the choreography, then this can be increased with skill moves added in which will depend slightly on your ability.

3 - Presentation!
Costume, props, music & choreography can all make or break a routine! For overall polished presentation you should aim for...

* A neat, well fitted, flattering costume
* Good quality music. Use something the crowd can get into!
jj Avoid offensive language!
* Practised & polished choreography. Know your routine inside out!
* Confidence!
* Use of facial expressions! Keep a huge smile plastered on :)
