When Go Figure caught up with Physique competitor Sesa Tomuli at the NABBA Counties in July 08 we asked her if she any comp plans for the 09 season. She replied 'yes I'm going to do figure'. We thought she was just kidding but true to her word, Sesa is on a mission to put all that muscle onto heels this year. Infact she's already started her preparation for the NZFBB June comp!

Sesa comes from a sporting family. Her oldest brother Jeremy was a professional rugby player who now lives in France while her other brother Daryl, who's very familiar to the NZ bodybuilding scene was a former Mr NZ for NZFBB. So naturally Sesa, who's also been gifted with awesome structure and genetics took up the sport of bodybuilding has also achieved great results.
Sesa feels she's achieved enough in physique and wants to sink her teeth into the challenges of competing as a figure girl this year. Helping her along the way is her partner in business and in life her fiance who recently turned Pro, Grant Pieterse. Ttogether they own Xtreme Nutrition in Hamilton.
These 20 somethings are the bright young things and the ones to watch in the future, in the meantime check out how Sesa aims to mould her super muscles into a sleek lean figure! |

Q: Up till now, you've competed in the physique class, why the change to figure this year?
A: I felt I had done as much as I could with the physique side of things. My mother's groaning display cabinet containing my trophies is testament to that! Putting on size and mass comes very easy for me so the move to figure means new challenges, new regimes and a new approach to training. Also, the glamour side of things really appeals to me, not to say physique isn't. LOL.
Q: Your body looks like it could put on muscle just by looking at weights! Which make you perfect for physique. How are you going to manage not getting too big for figure?
A: A very good question; my body seems to put on mass every time I look at a cream bun, let alone lifting weights. It's a constant balancing act, more so with the change to figure, where cardio is King and low weights/high reps are Queen. Nutritional excellence & smart training is the key for me at the end of the day.

Q: Regards to your weight training regime, are you still training quite heavy. What rep and set ranges are you working in? Days per week etc.
A: Haha too many secrets! What I will say is this: Reps are high, weights are low, cardio cardio cardio cardio. |
Q: What weight do you normally compete at for physique? What weight do you think you'll be for figure?
A: 62kg for physique. 58-59kg for figure.
Q: Is there a bodypart you think is going to give you the most grief?! Ie what you have to work on most. How are you going to whip it into shape?
A: My quads have always been strong and I have had to concentrate very hard to bring them into line with my "stock and trade" strengths like my thin waist, balanced symmetry and immaculate hair. LOL
Q: The comp's not till June, have you started your preparation? What are some things you're doing to get yourself slowly into shape.
A: Oh my god I've been suffering since November! No, not really, training started pretty light with the main ingredient: a new mindset to change from physique to figure. From there it was upping my cardio and designing an appropriate diet with enough leeway to chop and change it the closer I get to compy time. Serious weight training started Dec/Jan and I have started to do weekly updates on our XNH website for motivation. |

Q: Are you doing much cardio at the moment? Do you like doing it and how do you get motivated to do it?
A: Three to four times a week usually. A mix of hard core walking, aerobic classes, stationary bike and come close to compy time I'll be in the water swimming. I love cardio and the way a good sweat up makes me feel.
Q: Are you looking forward to the full on dieting? How do you think you'll cope and how do you think you'll overcome those temptations.
A: I do actually, because it certainly cuts down on the weekly food bill! Seriously though, I'm so used to being on a diet, it seems like I've been on one since the fifth form! I like the changes you can make week to week to a diet.

Q: Grant recently turned pro and competing soon at the IFBB Australian Grand Prix in March. Do you think that his dedication rubs off on you and will help you stay focused with your own comp goal?
A: Two words: mutual support. Grant is so driven in what he wants that I just get swept along for the ride. We do support each other however, both in training and dieting so it's awesome being with a partner who understands and motivates at the same time.
|
Q: Have you been practicing on heels? Does it come naturally walking in them for you.
A: I've been a 70s fashion gurl since I was young so heels come naturally to me. It's not so much the heels that will be the problem, more the butterflies in the stomach!
Q: What you looking forward to most when you step on stage as a figure girl??!!
A: The feeling that I have "made it" as a figure competitor and the sense of self achievement.
Q: How tall are you? Will you still be novice or open?!!!!
A: 5 foot 5 inches. Theoretically I'll be novice since it's my first comp as figure... but we'll see... not so sure.
Q: What's your ultimate goal in bodybuilding/figure comp in the future?
A: To win; it's ALWAYS to win. Nuff said. |
Sesa shows she's a natural poser in heels!
