Moe and Garry; Master and Apprentice?

16 January 07

This year Auckland based IFBB Pro Moe Mossawi's on a mission to improve both his physique and his PRO ranking on the Pro circuit. To help him, Moe's enlisted the help of former National and International bodybuilder Garry Jones to intensify his training sessions.
Over the past 2 weeks Garry, who's a Personal Trainer at Les Mills Auckland, has taken Moe through some gruelling workouts to fine tune and define Moe's physique.

In this article we get the inside scoop on their sessions and ask Garry about Moe's chances at the Ironman.

right: Moe and Garry, who's the Master and who's the Apprentice?!

How did it come about that you train Moe? Usually athletes entering a competition will come and see me at least 12 weeks out. I often drop into Moe’s shop for a chat and he brought it up one day. By this time it was around 7 weeks out from his comp so I said ‘Let’s get to work’!

Have you enjoyed training him? And what separates Moe from the regular weight training Joes?
Yes ofcourse! Moe is a world class athlete and as such sets his goals very high. Believe me, I have trained quite a few people who in the beginning think they 'know it all’! But one of the things that I like about Moe is that when I am training him and ask him to push himself for another set, he does this without question. Most people place limits on themselves thinking that they are training hard and I like to take them to another level, to reach their full potential.

With 4 weeks till contest, will you be training him more often?
It is dependant on our schedules as we are both busy people but we are ramping the sessions over the next few weeks.
Have you got a grand plan for him/his legs? It comes down to Moe’s energy levels on his leg training days. I don’t beliebe in ‘breaking people’. I prefer to get the best that they can give on the day.We are focusing on separating his quads and getting some striations going on.

Do you feel abit like master and apprentice when you train him? Funny you should say that, Moe and I joke about it sometimes but really….aren’t we all our 'own’ masters?

How do you think he’ll get on at Ironman and condition you think he can come in?
We’re definitely aiming for the TOP 10! He looks great now and will look even greater over the next few weeks. Its going to be a tough line up and a lot depends on what the judges prefer on the day.
