We know Wellington athlete Mandi Matheson has been on the competitive bodybuliding scene a long time but we didn't realise how long until she reminded us that she first competed in 1997, and has competed in 21 shows since.  What an awesome credit to her commitment to fitness and the passion she has for fine tuning her tall figure.   Or should we say physique!

This year Mandi has been training hard to compete in the ANB Asia Pacific Champs in May. She's still yet to decide if she'll stick to her love of physique or surprise us by going all glam and on heels.  Either way we know this Personal Trainer will do her best and enjoy every moment to shine on stage.

Find out more about Mandi and her mission!

How many years have you been training?
19 years resistance training, athletics from age 5, & aerobics from about age 11...forever a work in progress!!

Why did you take up bodybuilding in the first place?
Liked the toned look & I didn't have to fit in with a group fitness timetable to train! Enjoyed the discipline, & I was teaching Group Fitness Classes since I left school so the weights complimented that & then my workmates encouraged me to compete...(back in the old Lifestyle Gym days - Kerry Johnson, Paul Buckingham, John Leonard, Phily Nuku) so I thought ‘why not?'.

So it seems the NZ Figure and Bikini Pro show is on this Sat 20 March.  We haven't been contacted by the organiser for the event so unfortunately we have no information to give you.

However we do know Sesa Tomuli will be making her Pro debut at this show. We had a chance to talk to Sesa on the way over to Melbourne for the the Male Pro Show. She was going over to support her fiance Grant Pieterse who was competing and eventually placed 10th.

Sesa was all rugged up so we had no idea what lay underneath but she said she was "ready now and wish the show was today".

And boy is she ready!  as soon as she landed the dedicated Sesa headed to gym to do cardio.  We had to do some sweet talking to get her to reveal what was under her sweat shirt and we were blown away.

Sesa said she hasn't done any weights for a few months and has concentrated on doing cardio. Yet her genetics has dictated that she still holds her muscle.  Lucky girl.  We didn't see her legs but she assures us they are coming down nicely.

Good luck Sesa!

Sure we all have to put a lot of things on the line in order to compete.  Our jobs, our friends and relationships ...but are you willing to put your life on the line?  Vini Rangihaeata did exactly that and lived to tell the tale.

Vini had been training for 2 years to compete in a bodybuilding contest in 2005 when suddenly her dreams were shattered when she was in an accident at home which caused a brain swell and left her paralysed.

" Doctors said I'd never walk again. But the thought of walking never left my mind.  I was highly positive. I told them never use that phrase around me again. I had a lot of positive support around me.  I was more distraught about not being able to training."

Such was her determination, Vini proved the doctors wrong and 6 months later she was back on her feet.  " It took a year to rehab but I was back walking by end of ‘06.  The doctors were absolutely shocked and the biggest boost for me was that they used all the video from my physio classes as an example of mind power association" . Vini said the other reason she had to hurry and get out of hospital was that she had 2 kids to look after, (14 and 12 year old at the time) ‘and they needed their Mum at home'.
