Bodybuilding competitors come from all walks of life. They could work in the corporate world, be shop assistants, labourers, nurses, be at home Mums or they could come from the Airforce!  In which our newest wonder women are from.

Ashleigh Foote and Angela Ball work as Physical Training Instructors in the RNZAF in Blenheim and this year they have their sights set on competing at the NABBA Nelson Bays Champs in Oct which will held in Blenheim.

So we thought it would be interesting to find out what its like working in the Airforce and how Ashleigh will cope with the transition from wearing her uniform to wearing a bikini and being on heels!

1. what do you do in Airforce?   My trade is Physical Training Instructor and I am a Corporal.  My  working hours  Mon - Fri 0745 - 1630

2. when and where do you train  I work at the gym on base so we train there as well. Its really handy as its right next to our office. I usually train at lunchtime.

3. do you still have to do a regular fitness tests?  what does that involve?  Yes. We have to do an OFT (operational fitness test) once a year which involves a max push up test and a 5km march wearing a 20kg weighted vest and belt. There are different requirements for age and sex.

As a PTI we also have to do an additional test once a year which is a 3.2km run. Again there are different standards for age/sex.

4. what kind of training do you make the personnel do.  Is it gym based or do you go out on obstacle courses and cane the heck out of them!  We do a whole range of training with them. It ranges from weight training, circuits, running, battle PT (running around carrying logs, tyres etc), swimming and classes on sports skills. We also run a 3 hour sports event once a month for our trainees. These can be anything from orienteering, athletics, cross country, sports tournament to a beach carnival!

Sesa January 09
When Go Figure caught up with Physique competitor Sesa Tomuli at the NABBA Counties in July 08 we asked her if she any comp plans for the 09 season. She replied 'yes I'm going to do figure'.  We thought she was just kidding but true to her word, Sesa is on a mission to put all that muscle onto heels this year.  Infact she's already started her preparation for the NZFBB June comp!

Sesa and Grant July 08
Sesa comes from a sporting family. Her oldest brother Jeremy was a professional rugby player who now lives in France while her other brother Daryl, who's very familiar to the NZ bodybuilding scene was a former Mr NZ for NZFBB. So naturally Sesa, who's also been gifted with awesome structure and genetics took up the sport of bodybuilding has also achieved great results.

Sesa feels she's achieved enough in physique and wants to sink her teeth into the challenges of competing as a figure girl this year.  Helping her along the way is her partner in business and in life her fiance who recently turned Pro, Grant Pieterse. Ttogether they own Xtreme Nutrition in Hamilton.

These 20 somethings are the bright young things and the ones to watch in the future, in the meantime check out how Sesa aims to mould her super muscles into a sleek lean figure!

Lisa @ Fat Max's with Karyn and Lynette

In this video we catch up with Karyn Kelly and her training partner Lynette Skeats as they train legs at Fat Max's Gym in Greymouth.

In 2007 and 08 Karyn was the South Island NZFBB open physique over 55kg and overall Champ. While in NABBA, she was the open figure tall South Island Champ, then went on to place 2nd at the Nationals for both.

In 08 she also placed 2nd at NABBA Pro Am in Palmerston North.

Lynette and Karyn find time to train during their laughing sets.
Karyn is taking 2009 off competing to concentrate on mass building, especially on her legs. In this video full of laughs, Karyn talks about how she copes with her off season weight where she describes herself as a bit of a 'chunky monkey' at the moment.

Right: the not so chunky Karyn at contest time. (left, Karyn. right, Kat Hall)

While in Christchurch I bumped into a couple of Champions. Annette Gallagher and Richard Parnham training arms so I thought I'd tag along and video their training session and interview them about their contest year ahead.

Annette and Richard guest posed at the NABBA Asia Pacific champs so they've already been dieting.  Hard to believe they've only been dieting a couple of weeks as they're in good condition already.

Lisa and Annette
This power couple have a few titles under their belt. Annette won the NABBA National Figure titles in 02, 03, 04, 06 and 07. Together they won the NABBA Universe Mixed pairs title in 07.  Meanwhile Richard was the NABBA National Athletic Champ in 07 amongst other titles.

Check out the video to see Annette and Richard's hot bods and find out what their plans are for the year.
