I know that I'll probably do some form of exercise in my old age but I wasn't quite sure if I'll be doing weight training. However after seeing the story on Colleen and Digby on 20/20 last Thursday 28 Oct 10, they've certainly redefined what old age is and what is actually possible as we get older.

70 used to be so old but suddenly seeing these 2 age defying fitness machines at work in the gym has given me much more enthusiasm as I move towards the big numbers.

I've only chatted to Digby and Colleen at shows and have always appreciated their enthusiasm for bodybuilding. Sure, they know they're not going to match it with some of the boys and girls with bigger muscles and tighter bodies than them but they make up for that in spirit of participation.  Afterall, if you're a competitor you'll understand that contest day is not just about competing but about the comraderie of meeting old friends backstage and having a wine or two while pumping up. Am I right or am I right ladies?!!

You've done it! You've finally achieved your goal of competing in a bodybuilding competition. But what now? Do you simply let yourself go and indulge in all those foods you've been hanging out for months.

Depending on how you felt during your competition you could be feeling one of two ways:

1) you're inspired to hit the gym the following week, still careful about your diet and watch that you don't eat too much junk and work harder than ever before
or
2) you saw all the other bodies and you feel demotivated because you may not have achieved your goal of looking how you want to. You throw in the towel and eat everything in sight for a week and wonder how you've gained that 10kg in such a short time.

To prevent you from getting to that stage, here are some suggestions I would make to help you get back into your training before you completely blowout of your hard earned shape:

Yes its true!  Bodybuilding could be poisoning me.  Its a bold statement and many factors are leading me (and my leading allergy investigor and nutritionist) Stacey Hancock to this shocking conclusion. And it could be what's happening to you.

But first let me bring you up to speed with my allergy and health news in the past  months since my article Lisa's Food Makeover on 8 August 10.

I won't bore you too long but you need to know the background to our conclusion.  The past month has been tough for me healthwise.  I've had to deal with an ear infection (I've probably had an infection of some sort once a year for the past 3 years) which I've had to take antibiotics for.  Once off the antibiotics earlier this month Stacey adviced me to take lots of Nutralife Vitamin C, echinacea, probiotics etc to help speed recovery.  But still I was feeling crappy.  No energy in the afternoons and a bit blah all round really.  We then went on to an even more bacteria killing plan by adding more candida (girly issue!) oriented supps to kill bad bacteria and encouraged healthy ones back into my body. Mmm love the Slippery Elm Stacey...not.

I have not yet seen a judge come up on stage with a set of calipers and scales to weigh anybody at a bodybuilding show to check athletes' weight and fat %. In some cases maybe they should.

Depending on which class the athlete is competing in, the fat % for a bodybuilder perhaps should be 10% or below. A figure athlete roughly around 10-12% but don't take these figures as gospel as different bodytypes will accumulate their fat in certain spots.
For Example, some people may have a lean upper body but their bottom half maybe still quite 'heavy' eventhough their total bodyfat reading is 12%. Different bodybuilding organisations will also have differing views on how lean an athlete should get so the best way to gauge what the organisation wants is to go to their shows and see the standard.

Having a weight or fat % goal is a good guideline but the best judge to how you're looking is to check yourself out in the mirror, or get someone else to do it for you. If you, or your helper/PT, think you're not looking lean enough then get back on that bike or treadmill!
